The L-1011 Build Project
Photos & 3D Model Renderings
Welcome to the RC CAD2Vr project renderings and Image gallery. The current project is a scaled model of the L-1011, the iconic TriStar Airliner. As I document the entire process from design to build, I will be adding images here. If you are interested in creating your own radio controlled model, or would like to create 3D models, check out my complete 3D modeling tutorial series using Fusion 360
3D Printable Nose Landing Gear - Version 4
After months of design iterations and testing, the RC L-1011’s nose gear assembly for airframe #1 is ready.
Selecting RC Airplane Electronics
See how the L-1011 will be actuated using FrSky Servos and electronics in this plan view.

Fuselage Forward Section & Nose Cone
Check out the the forward fuselage section design, which includes the landing gear. This is the second phase of the L-1011 Scale Model Build.
Building the Large Scale RC L-1011 Airliner - Part 1
Video Episode 1 - The L-1011 Build Begins. In this first episode I manufacture and assemble the center fuselage using a laser cutter and 3D printer.
Custom RC Airliner Engines
Short video of the 3D printed engine nacelle and how it is mounted to the under side of the wing.
1st 3D Printed Airplane Landing Gear Prototype
3D printing the model landing gear to assemble a working prototype has been a valuable learning experience. Check out the photos of the first prototype of L-1011 Build
3D Printed MJF Nylon Wing Mounts
(Animation Videos Included)
For the L-1011 RC Model, I opted to not use the conventional tube mounting method. Instead the structure of the wing mount will more closely resemble a full scale airliner where the spars transfer the weight into the main airframe rather than a tub or rod.
Custom RC Airliner Landing Gear
As the design of the model L-1011 nears completion, figuring out the hardware and placement is part of the finishing details. See all of the renderings and some background on the Oleo Pneumatic Landing gear system design for this model.
The RC L-1011’s Iconic Tail Takes Shape
It’s taken hours upon hours designing this one of a kind, icon of aviation’s airline industry. The L-1011 tail section has been a real design challenge, with it’s curvatures, S-Duct, body tapers, and stabilator design. Finally have the final shape almost finalized.
The Underbelly of an RC Airliner - Landing Gear
Up close and personal, in this photo blog post I show you some more detailed of the RC L-1011 underbelly and it’s placement of the landing gear.
Battery and Electronics Access
Having a beautiful exterior of the RC L-1011 means hiding the access of batteries and electronics access. In this post I show how I will go about creating a hidden “Latch” to access the interior compartments.
